How do the Green Home Grants in Bristol work?.

The Green Home Grants scheme opened on 30th September 2020.

However, administratively it has had a whole pile of teething problems. It is only now (14/1/21) that vouchers are being issued.

Every private home in England is entitled to a Green Home Grant, but there are 3 categories.

  • A homeowner in receipt of a qualifying benefit (see list below) will qualify for a grant of £10,000 and will not have to make any contribution.
  • A homeowner who is not in receipt of a qualifying benefit will qualify for a grant of £5,000 but will have to make a one third contribution.
  • A privately rented property will only qualify for a £5,000 grant even if the tenant is in receipt of a qualifying benefit. The application for the grant has to be made by the landlord.

The energy efficiency improvements have been put into 2 groups – List A, which are primary improvements and List B, which are secondary improvements.

List A is Insulation and Renewable Heating, and List B is Draught Proofing, Glazing and Heating Controls.

There are some rules to the Green Home Grants in Bristol.

  1. You cannot have an improvement from List B, unless you have had at least one improvement from List A.
  2. The Grant that you have for List B cannot be more than the Grant you are having for List A.
  3. Both groups might qualify for additional grants, but they could not be used to “top up” the Green Homes Grant. They would be separate free standing grants.
